Mobile Services - History

With the many dreams of Mobility India, we also had a dream to have a wheelchair bank that clients could easily access and hire.  Also we wanted a vehicle which could accommodate a wheelchair user in their chair eliminating the need for transfer, the individuals then being able to travel wherever they wanted to.

While we were talking about this idea one of our funder’s Ms. Kamala Achu from Jaipur Limb Campaign came forward in support of the idea. She also suggested getting some sponsorship funding for the project.

The idea of the project was liked by Accenture who were previously known as Andersen Consulting. They approved it within a week of submission.

After receiving the confirmation MI approached the engineering faculty at the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) to explore.  Mr. Aditya S and Mr. Subodh final year engineer students were interested in this project and we selected Beavers Filters to finish the work.  Meanwhile two young engineering students from UK, Andrew Bowes and Sam Gahazaros were contacted and they designed our foldable ramp.  Computers were of very little help to them and they were forced to work hands on with the technicians at the workshop.  There was a lot of exchange of ideas between Mr. Aditya and Mr. Subodh and Mr. Andrew and Mr. Sam and soon both the foldable ramp and hydraulic lift were working.

The service was launched on 15th November 2000 and right from the first day there were lots of enquiries from people and there was tremendous cooperation from many sectors.  Since then it has been running continually and we have been able to provide the service to a greater number of people.

We would like to thank Jaipur Limb Campaign who helped us to get the sponsorship for the project and the Accenture Charity Staff Fund for accepting our project and funding us and all the people who worked hard to make this project successful.
