Mobility India was set up in Bangalore, South India, in
1994
to reduce the wide gap between the need and availability of
rehabilitation services in rural
India. Mr.
Chapal Khasnabis, the founder Executive Director was
instrumental in establishing and shaping Mobility India. His
vision and determination are the guiding forces behind MI's
success.
MI promotes mobility for persons with disabilities, especially
those in rural areas,
who are poor especially women and children through awareness
raising, training, improved
services, advocacy, research and
development, and all other activities towards an
inclusive society where persons with disabilities have
equal rights and a good
quality of life.
MI is the organisation that has a perfect blend of disability
and non-disability at all levels - an innovative organisation of
abilities and commitment and its approach to address the real
need. Mobility India has come up in a big way since its
inception. It has grown tremendously because of the need.
The Regional Resource Centre was established in 1998 at
Kolkata to promote our
work in North Eastern part of India
Mobility India’s Rehabilitation Research and Training Centre –
“Millennium Building on Disability”
is a state of the art model disabled friendly building with
various accessibility features for all. It is an ideal
model of how a building can influence Changes in the Disability
field and it houses all of Mobility India’s activities.
It
is also the only Training centre in Karnataka in particular and
South India in general to train and develop manpower especially
persons with disabilities in the field of
Orthotics, Prosthetics and Rehabilitation
and also promotion of Community Based Rehabilitation.
Students
include persons from low-income groups in rural areas and urban
slums, especially women and persons with disabilities. It is
envisaged that they will undergo the training and go back to
their communities to work for persons with disabilities in their
respective places.
