Community Based Rehabilitation

Education

Education is a fundamental right.  The programme lays emphasis on inclusive education for disabled and non-disabled children.  The programme focuses on access to primary education for children with disabilities with an emphasis on inclusive education-

  • Ensuring children with disability attend school regularly

  • Facilitate coaching classes  through Self help Groups

  • Making Schools Barrier Free

  • Computer training for children and youth with disabilities

 In the early years of the CBR programme, Makkala Bhavishya (Children’s Future) was initiated to enroll poor disabled and no disabled children who were not in school or had dropped out, back in school. The programme identified the children, facilitated their physical rehabilitation in the form of regular therapy, assistive devices and surgical intervention whatever appropriate for each child. Educated women within the community were identified to conduct coaching classes, bridge course centres. Sanghas or Self help Groups were set up to encourage parents to save up for the children’s future and continue education.

 Currently through the programme a total of 213 out of 251 children with disabilities have access to education-

Early childhood-22

Primary -84

Secondary -55

Special -52

29 children with severe disabilities are accessing home based education through the Sarva Shikhsa Abhiyan (SSA), a Govt. of India programme for Universalization on Elementary Education.
