1994-98

1999-2003

  2004-2009

Set up in Bangalore, South India, in 1994 to enable more organized work in the field of mobility appliances and to bring about a change in the disability field in general.

…In 1995 continued to work with 12 partner organizations and started short training courses.  Following a year's work in the field, MI formulated goals to meet the challenges that lay ahead…

Have a mobile workshop to extend wider reach to people with disabilities in rural areas

Design and develop assistive devices appropriate to low income regions

…During the year 1996

Mobile workshop launched

10 disabled women identified to train as technicians

Research & Development in

1. A barefoot caliper to suit the rural conditions in India

2. A prosthetic knee joint for Jaipur limbs and plastic ankle joints.

3. Design of orthotic knee joint began

…By the year 1997

Mobility India received National recognition- an award for Plastic Orthosis at the Orthotics & Prosthetics Society of India, (OPSI).

Rehabilitation Aids Workshop by Women with Disabilities (RAWWD) was established with 8  women trained the previous year.

Evaluation of last three years activities  were carried out and published

As Mobility India grew, new concerns emerged-

India produces a number of Prosthetic & Orthotic and Therapy professionals who prefer to practice in urban areas and are therefore inaccessible to the rural disabled

To meet the need- train a second level of assistants working with trained professionals to provide rehabilitation services at grass roots

Build a Rehabilitation, Research & Training Centre to  collectively address the above mentioned concerns

…The year 1998

Mobility India's Regional Centre in Kolkata set up to provide and strengthen rehabilitation facilities in the Indian sub continent

MI takes up a project to train 14 people with disability in the rights based approach to disability rehabilitation

Grass Root Partners suggest that Mobility India run formal training programmes for rehabilitation personnel
