ANDHRA PRADESH
Gram Abhyudaya Mandali (GRAM), Nizamabad -
Works towards the empowerment of women, Dalits and people with
disabilities in Nizamabad and Adilabad districts. Established in
1980, it started off working in 5 villages, today it covers 416
villages in 14 mandals. It began including people with disabilities
in the sphere of its activities in 1997 with the GRAM-Nireekshana
project. MI started working with GRAM in 1997 when we established an
orthotic unit for them. Last year the MI team trained local artisans
in fabrication of special chairs and standing frames. Inputs were
also given to their field and workshop staff in identifying simple
repair and maintenance of aids and appliances. Three of our trainees
have been placed with the organisation.
Movement for Rural Emancipation (MORE),
Madanapalle - Established in 1984, MORE perceives CBR as the most
effective approach to reach out to larger geographic areas and
address issues related to people with disabilities. They work in
three mandals covering 305 villages. During the 3 visits last year,
MI conducted an awareness programme for their staff giving inputs in
simple therapy techniques and maintenance of aids and appliances,
and local fundraising. Clients were also assessed and measurements
taken for aids/ appliances which were also fitted under the ADIP
scheme. All visits were with the mobile workshop. MORE has been
our partner since 1999.
Rural Development Trust (RDT), Ananthpur - We
have been working with RDT since 1998, last year, we visited them on
three occasions. We conducted a training programme on upper
extremity prosthetics. Their staff were trained in the fabrication
of below elbow prosthesis. The MI team did an assessment of 2 upper
extremity amputees and 3 children with congenital absence of limbs.
Two staff from RDT are currently attending our one-year training
courses, one in orthotics and the other in prosthetics. Two field
staff attended our 6-weeks CBR training course. Four of our
trainees have been placed with RDT.

CHATTISGARH
Raigarh Ambikapur Health Association (RAHA),
Pathalgaon - Established in 1969, RAHA aims at coordinating the
activities of all health centers in the area. One of its basic
activities is to promote a 'community health programme' through
preventive healthcare for the tribals in the area. During our visit
last year we restructured their workshop at their new premises.
They have sent two trainees for the one-year rehabilitation therapy
training course. Four of our trainees have been placed with the
organisation. RAHA has been our partner since 1998.

KARNATAKA
Gramina Abhyudaya Seva Samsthe (GASS),
Dodaballapur - It was established in 1996 to address the needs of
people with disabilities in Doddaballapur taluk through community
based rehabilitation programmes. There are about 3,500 people with
disabilities in this area which has a population of 2.24 lakh. The
organisation today works in 200 villages and has a team of 22. We
have been working with GASS since 2001. The MI team visited the
organisation 4 times last year. Mr Ravi Naik of GASS visited MI for
a month's training in general repair and maintenance. He also
purchased the necessary tools and equipment for the unit at GASS.
They are planning to construct their own rehabilitation centre this
year. Two of our trainees have been placed with the organisation.
Narendra Foundation, Pavgada - This
organisation has been our partner since 2001. It is working in 42
villages of Pavgada taluk in Tumkur district. A follow up visit was
undertaken last year for repairs of aids and appliances, which were
distributed the previous year. Repairs were also undertaken at the
organisation's workshop.
National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro
Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore - NIMHANS is one of the premier
institutes in the country for providing high quality care to
patients suffering from neurological and psychiatric disorders. NIMHANS
celebrated the first anniversary of the orthotic section which MI
helped set up. It has been our partner since 2001.
Rehabilitation Aids Workshop by Women with
Disabilities (RAWWD), Bangalore - RAWWD was launched by MI in 1997.
The objective was to encourage women to become technicians and
provide women with disabilities with means for a livelihood. A
range of orthoses and prostheses are produced at the workshop which
can claim some of Bangalore's top hospitals among its clients. It
is operated by 8 staff and one trainee. Regular visits to support
their work were made last year. The organisation has sponsored one
of their staff for the one-year training course on prosthetics at
MI. Six of our trainees have been placed with the organisation to
add another perspective to their training
Samarthya (Samuha), Deodurga, Raichur and
Koppal- Samarthya is one of the projects of Samuha. Its’ focus is
the drought prone areas of North Karnataka. Its CBR programme covers
126 villages in 5 taluks. This organisation has been our partner
since 1994 and we helped set up its orthotic workshop. We visited
the organization 4 times last year. We conducted a training
programme for below knee prosthesis and a training programme was
also held on molded polypropylene KAFO for their technicians. We
also assisted their technicians in conducting a fitment programme
organized by the local Rotary club. A team from MI visited the
Koppal workshop and gave inputs to the project staff on the casting
and modification of PP calipers. Mr Ashok and Mr Jadhav from the
organisation visited MI in September to familiarise themselves with
the CBR programme. They also visited RAWWD. Two of MI's trainees
were placed in SAMUHA as a part of trainees' placement.

ORISSA
Asha Bhavan (Holy Cross Convent), Jaganathpur
-
A home for disabled girls which MI continues to support in the
functioning of their workshop and CBR programme. Four of their staff
took part in the six weeks training on 'Management of Locomotor
disabilities for CBR workers’ held at MI last year. This
organisation has been our partner since 1999.
Vikas Bhavan Home for the Physically
Handicapped, Bargarh -We have been supporting this organisation
since 1998 to build their technical capacity. We also helped in the
planning and expansion of their activities to nearby villages. Two
people from the organisation are doing the one-year training course
on orthotics at MI.

TAMIL NADU
Society for the Care of the Handicapped (SCH),
Tirunelveli- Established in 1988, it runs a hostel for boys with
disability. It also reaches out to more people with disability in
rural areas through other NGOs. nTwo visits were done to SCH to
assist the technical staff in dealing with spinal braces for
children of the hostel and to conduct a training programme in
fabricating ankle foot orthosis. SCH has been our partner since
1994.
Gandhigram Kasturba Hospital Artificial Limb
Research Centre, Dindigul - Founded in 1947, it has developed an
Artificial Limb & Research Centre and also a workshop for the
production of the Jaipur Foot. In the last year MI helped them in
establishing their orthotic workshop and also conducted a training
programme for fabrication of plastic orthoses. They have started
fabrication of plastic calipers and prostheses using HDPE pipes. We
received a lot of support from them in the research work on Jaipur
Foot. This organisation has been our partner since 1999.
Voice Trust, Tiruchirapalli
- Established in
1985, Voice Trust is committed to working for the empowerment of the
economically, socially and educationally disadvantaged people in the
rural areas in Trichy and Thanjavur districts. Its CBR programme
covers 43 villages in Mannachanallar taluk of Trichy. It took up
the cause of disabled children in 1997. MI conducted a training
programme for their CBR staff last year on various types of
disabilities and identification and management of children with
cerebral palsy. Their staff visited MI for exposure and awareness
last year. We have been in partnership with Voice Trust since 2001.
One of their staff has participated in our six weeks CBR training
course. The organisation is planning to establish a Rehabilitation
Centre for Spinal Cord Injury. Three of our trainees have been
placed with the organisation.

WEST BENGAL
Asha Bhavan Centre (ABC), Belari - ABC is
involved in primary health care, rehabilitation of disabled
children, education and social-medical services. It also provides
physiotherapy in the community to people with disabilities. We made
several visits for assessments, delivered appliances and made
repairs. Two staff from the organisation are at MI doing the
one-year training courses on orthotics and prosthetics. ABC has been
our partner since 2000.
Howrah South Point, Jalpaiguri
- This
organisation works through CBR and home based programmes. They have
five centers in Kolkatta, last year we visited them for some
follow-up work. The centre sent one trainee for the six weeks
training programme for CBR workers on 'Management of Locomotive
Disability.' We have supported this organisation since 2001.
Indranarayanpur Nazrul Samrithi Sangha (INSS),
Sunderban - This organisation is a new partner. It works in the
areas of health, women self-help groups, dispensary and disaster
management during floods, etc. We visited them last year to get an
idea of the work they do and draw up a plan of action.
Makkala Mukhthadhara, Hoogly - This
organisation is a new partner. It works for the poor and disabled
children of suburban villages of Howrah. Its main activities
include CBR services, last year we visited them to assess people
with disabilities and fit them with orthoses/ prostheses/ rehab
devices. It was for the first time that these people were being
catered to.
Sanchar, Pailan - This organisation works in
the South 24 Parganas district. It provides training to CBR workers
as well as coordinators. Their CBR trainees visited our Kolkatta
centre in November to get oriented to the various types of orthoses/
prostheses/ rehab devices and their benefits. We have supported
Sanchar since 1998.
Subhi Association for Women with Disabilities (SAWWD)
- This organisation is a new partner. It works to empower the poor
and rural disabled women to make them self-reliant and enable them
to live meaningful, productive and dignified lives. Last year MI
assessed many children with disabilities and fitted them with
orthoses/ prostheses.
