Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant - Overview
Location: MI > Training > Training Program > Long Term Program>Overview

Course Definition:  The Rehabilitation Therapist Assistant is a skilled rehabilitation para-professional health-care worker who performs the rehabilitation plan of person with disability under supervision of rehabilitation therapist (Physiotherapist and occupational therapist). The Rehabilitation Therapist Assistant is responsible for training people with disabilities in exercises, conduction treatments, assisting in evaluations and tests, observation and report of responses, and interaction with the family.  They will be familiar with different types of disabilities which affect both children and adults. They will be trained to work with families and the community to address social causes of disability and change attitudes.

Duration: 12 months long, and begins every year in July.

Accreditation: Granted Accreditation Status by the Rehabilitation Council of India (a statutory body under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt of India) since its beginning in 2002

Expected Competencies:

On completion of course the Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant under supervision of Rehabilitation Therapists (Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist) will be able to:

1. Carry out basic assessment as well as treatment interventions

2. Evaluate different types of disabilities in children and adults

3. Communicate effectively with people with disabilities and their families, care givers and community, as well as with other team members

4. Conduct a basic assessment of people with disabilities in order to identify individual priorities, the main rehabilitation problems and the needs for intervention plan

5. Set objectives, devise appropriate treatment plans and ensure regular re-assessment and evaluation of results, with suitable modifications of objectives

6. Carry out effective rehabilitation at community level, changing attitudes and behaviour in the community

7. Act as an agent of change, building the knowledge of persons with disability, their family, community members, other CBR team members and the community as a whole on disability and rehabilitation issues

8. Work collaboratively with the rehabilitation team managing the day-to-day activities of the therapy unit and supporting field staff to implement rehabilitation programmes at field level

9. Engage in proactive interaction with professionals in the region to facilitate and increase networking.

10. Long-term involvement in professional and personal growth

Eligibility:

  • 10+2 from recognized Central/Sate board or equivalent

  • Required to pass English and Maths proficiency test.

  • Preference will be given to person with disability especially women with disability

Career Options: There is a great demand for Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant especially in developing countries. Employment opportunities are found in community rehabilitation centers, hospitals, outpatient clinics, governmental institutions, NGO’s and special schools.
